Hardly a day goes by that I don't hear someone talking about how no one wants to work anymore. I know many employers who cannot find anyone to fill their positions. Everywhere I go I see help wanted signs. The frustration seems even greater when young people are mentioned. The older population are often quick to judge today's youth and say they are unmotivated and spoiled. These thoughts were nagging me recently. I have been barely keeping my head above water this summer.
I have had several people helping me, but generally only for a few hours a day or one person at a time. Chores were piling up and I needed some strong backs. I decided to use Facebook to ask for help, but I did not feel optimistic. I was blown away! I had several kids (or their moms) reaching out, asking for a job. The first morning, they were all here on time and eager to jump in. A job I anticipated needing two days to complete was finished in two HOURS!! Yes, these kids showed up and showed out. It was hot and humid, they were dirty and soaked with sweat, but they completed one task and asked what was next. I had a few different groups that worked for me over several days, and they all exceeded my expectations.
Maybe kids these days aren't not lacking motivation. Maybe they are just lacking opportunities.
